  1. Choosing a movement
  2. Size and thickness
  3. Water resistance

Choosing a movement

Quartz is the low-maintenance choice, from £30 for the LIGE 89143. Automatics wind themselves as you wear them. They start at £50 for the T-WINNER 188 skeleton, and the £115 CADISEN C8244 has a Miyota 8215 movement and a 10 bar rating; see automatic and mechanical watches. For a stopwatch, see chronographs.

Size and thickness

Every watch lists its thickness, and its diameter where the maker publishes one. Some makers give only a range, such as 40 to 44 mm, and the page says so. Slim dress watches start at 7.5 mm thick (the BERNY 2944M); sports and digital pieces run to 15 mm or more. Field watches such as the BERNY T2596M and ADDIESDIVE MY-1508 sit in between; see field watches.

Water resistance

A 3 bar watch is for rain and hand-washing only, and nearly half of these are 3 bar. At 5 bar you can shower and take a short swim, and 10 bar is fine for swimming, as on the CADISEN C8244 or ADDIESDIVE AD2095. Our water resistance guide explains each rating in more detail.
